The Notion of Sufferings in the Culture of the Late Bulgarian Middle Ages

Summary/Abstract: А certain notion in outlined in the article about the human being in the Bulgarian culture, which is common for the written official texts and the oral tradition. An attempt is made for tracing out the relations between the various levels of culture. The notion of man as а creature comprising hostile to one another soul and body, connected through sufferings, originally appeared in religious texts of monks-ascetics like Evagius of Pont Some of them were condemned by the church – the official Christian-Orthodox anthropology is rather different, – but by the intercession of Byzantium the texts found their place in the Bulgarian Middle Age literature. The opposition soul/body is very productive in the Bulgarian traditional culture. By virtue of this, texts like those of Evagius are „identified” as belonging to oral tradition and gained increasing popularity. An integral concept of human being appeared, in which elements from the oral and theological traditions successfully coexisted. The concept becomes а part of the notion of the world, according to which the earth gives shelter to the dead body, while the purified soul goes to paradise, and in between are the bounding heaven, where the sufferings remain – connecting the soul and the body.
