Summary/Abstract: The topic of this paper is an analysis of the growth of extreme tourism and of the influence of the media on potential tourists through resounding representations of the risks in the form of live coverage. The paper presents a research of the increase of natural disasters in the last twenty years, an interpretation of the risks and media coverage and their influence on the decisions that people make when planning a vacation. Even though various surveys imply that the number of tourists in high-risk countries has reduced, the data vary and there are more and more tourist agencies which offer exclusively this type of destinations. The paper specially focuses on the Swiss agency Babel Travel, the Cultural Engagement journeys and one of their founders, Robert Young Pelton, an adventurer and journalist, who have teamed up to create tempting marketing for potential extreme tourists. Using general types of risk, a comparative analysis has been conducted, comparing regular perception of risks and their encouragement in extreme tourism.
