Insights into Urban Life, Cultural Change, and Modernization in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians, 1918–1928

Summary/Abstract: The paper sheds light on the phenomena of urbanization and cultural transformation in major cities of the Kingdom of SCS. The processes of cultural change and societal modernization were accelerated at the beginning of the inter-war period due to the chaotic conditions after the First World War. Prostitution and the dissolution of the traditional concept of marriage jeopardized family life. Relaxed attitudes between the genders, especially among the younger urban population, emerged in this period. In spite of the conservative social and political milieus, urban women gained self-confidence and influence. Yugoslav cities were marked both by dynamic modernization and numerous cultural transformations but also by a permanent housing crisis and desperate living conditions.
