Summary/Abstract: The places and spaces in the central city area of Skopje affected by the key event of the earthquake in 1963 can define space in all its ideological configuration. Space structured in this way reveals the new collective awareness of the older citizens of Skopje in the form of nostalgic memories of socialism, i. e. communism, and its urban symbols within the framework of a larger utopian definition of the contemporary space called Skopje. Consequently, we can say that both nostalgia and utopia are a fairly significant characteristic of urban living in Skopje. Present in the mental maps mostly of the older population, they represent nostalgic and utopian annexes to the transformations brought about by our contemporary way of life.
