Summary/Abstract: If they are to be motivating, translation courses should be based on ananalysis of students‘ needs. These can be examined by means of ethnomethodological conversation analysis. The example given in this article shows that the two translators who negotiate their translation to achieve a common version of the target text reveal in the course of their negotiation what their naïve ideas about translation are and what the unreflected, unconscious ”pseudo theories” actually are which lie behind their decision-making in translation. The task of the teacher is to analyze the data together with the students and show them how they fit into the larger frame of translation theories and why some are successful strategies and others are not. Ideally, students will change their translational behavior accordingly. For the teacher these data provide the basis for the structure of the translation course, as well as, on a larger scale, the basis for the whole of a translation curriculum.
