The Ritual of Giving a Name

Summary/Abstract: The present article includes information on the choice of a name and traditions connected with giving it to a Muslim child. The reader may find information here on the best and most beautiful name for a boy-child and the best and most beautiful name for a girl-child, what principles are applied when choosing a name and what names the Prophet suggests. The article describes the ritual, during which a child is given a name, its procedure and the main message. The reader may learn here also about another ritual which accompanies the name-giving ritual and is a symbolic moment of joining the child to the Muslim community. At the end of the present article, the author collected Mohammad’s sentences on the correct choice of a name, his advice on what name can bring salvation to the child and his parents.
