The First Attempt of the Compilation of a Linguistic Atlas of Albanian (1940-1944)

Summary/Abstract: In this paper the author reconstructs the efforts made by the Center for Albanian Studies of the Italian Academy of Sciences from 1940 til 1944 to the compilation of an “linguistic atlas of Albanian” through inedited documents who are preserved in the Archive of the Italian National Academy (Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei). The author describes the inception of this project, the work done for four years in collaboration with the albanian linguist Eqrem Çabej and especially the “historical reasons” who pushed the Academy to send away Çabej a few months before the project was abandoned. At the end of the paper, as an appendix is published an article prepared by Çabej for the “Rivista d’Albania” about the preparatory work of the compilation of the Atlas which was not published, forbidden by the censure.
