Summary/Abstract: The following article raises an increasingly topical question : what fundamental linguistic knowledge do translator and interpreter trainees need in order to become qualified professionals ? We start by discussing recent experience with students and the results of a survey conducted in October 2009 to trace master students basic knowledge about linguistics. Further, we examine existing theories on the link between linguistics and translation studies and we try to determine adequate pedagogical means to enhance students’ awareness of the role linguistics play in the translation process.
