Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to consider the problem of the socio-cultural space of the first stage of political transformation reflected/created in the Polish cinema at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. The subject of the analysis are selected films from the period of 1989-1993 referring to the phase described by sociologists as a “transition” – the liminal moment of the transformation process, heralding the transition from the socialist system to capitalism. The work seeks to answer questions such as how the films show the destruction of the former political system and its effects, and how they represent the new spheres of the free market and the associated transformation of identity. Questions are also raised as to the extent to which the landscape of change is the result of expressing freedom and forcing the idea of new economic and social opportunities, to what extent is it a question of disarray and how the transformation process itself (revolution, evolution or return to the past) is understood by filmmakers. Considerations are accompanied by an anthropological and sociological perspective focused on the study of the relationship between film and reality, the relationship between film and the space of cultural norms, values and identities.
