Summary/Abstract: The cult of St. Barbara in the professional environment of miners takes many different forms. It has been developing in Upper Silesia since the first half of the 19th century and is related to the intensive development of the mining industry in this area. The most characteristic material and immaterial manifestations of the cult of St. Barbara include: churches and chapels under her invocation, paintings and statues depicting the patron of miners, functioning brotherhoods of St. Barbara, songs and prayers to St. Barbara, celebrating the 4th December as a patron and professional holiday (so-called Barbórka), which was inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018.
