Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the language of space, which is one of the key elements of a literary text. Through different methodological approaches the author makes an attempt at contributing the interpretation of space in the Montenegrin literature of the twentieth century. In the novel "Monigreni" the activation of the opposition between the open and the closed space can be clearly seen, as well as the countryside and the city-urban chronotope. There is a clear dispersion among the characters especially among those who are related to the countryside and the city-urban chronotope. The space of damnation in this novel is related to the space of the old Duklja (Doclea), in which the Monigren tribe is trying to preserve itself. Through the presentation of the symbolical signs of the snake and the apple (we must note that according to the Pears's interpretation these symbols are the hardest to understand, and that the relation between the designation and the designated is the most distant), an inseparable bond between the characters and the spatial structures is emphasized.
