Summary/Abstract: Social entrepreneurship draws the attention of researchers due to the unique approach to social and economic problems. This is particularly important in developing countries which struggle with high unemployment, social inequalities and illiteracy, among others. One such example is India, where despite unprecedented progress in recent years, around 30% of the population still live below the poverty line, while illiteracy and poor health care are still huge challenges. The activities of social enterprises can contribute to the reduction of poverty and improve the quality of life. These enterprises focus their activities on the social needs of the poor, filling in “development gaps” that state or private enterprises are unable to fill. The aim of the article is to present and analyse the activities of social enterprises in modern India.
