Summary/Abstract: The article presents various aspects of the work of the Franco‑Austriandirector Gisèle Vienne, one of the most important artists of contemporaryEuropean theater in their forties. With originality, Vienne buildscomplex stage worlds that treat the text only as one of its elements anda separate authorial understanding defining realism. She creates performancescombining elements of dramatic theatre, contemporary dance,work with objects – dolls and robots – and electronic music. The articlereconstructs the artist’s creative path, embraces the aesthetics of hertheater in the context of contemporary art, literature, philosophy andchanges that have taken place in French theatre over the last decades.The portrait of Vienne also includes many statements by her colleagues.
