Summary/Abstract: The Velenje electro-chemical combine is one of the most striking examples of the socialist type (non)enterprise in Slovenia after World War II. The idea of the project was born immediately after the war and its implementation began in early Sixties. Its purpose would have been the gasification of the Velenje lignite in order to meet the energy demands of Slovenian industry. It should have also provided a basis for the development of the chemical industry which was supposed to become one of the strongest branches of the national economy. In 1967, after the investment had endangered the liquidity of its main creditor the Slovenian Commercial Bank, the project was cancelled, while the settlement of financial obligations took several more years and demanded huge efforts from the state. The political responsibility for the failure of the project has never been publicly declared.
