Summary/Abstract: Gina Pane’s performances were also based on pain. The artist’s priority was to problematize the pain experienced due to the sex discrimination and represent it in her performances. She also cared about societal pains. The essentialist discourse adopted by the feminist policies of the time brought forward some of the differences which distinguish female from the other sex. Pane, as an artist, stated that the female sensitivity, sentiment and fertility were critical to define woman, which she exhibited by means of her body. During her performances, Pane cared about the lack of distance to the audience and her presence as a real being. In order to make the audience feel the pain she experienced during her performances and increase the impact on the audience, she faced potentially dangerous situations by cutting and making her body bleed with sharp objects and pushed the limits of her body.
