Summary/Abstract: Availing herself of information, collected along ethnographic lines, statistical data, archive materials, and data obtained from the sociological research on the subject of The Traditional and the Contemporary in Establishing Civil Rituals in Veliko Turnovo District, the writer finds that, although lacking a normative and juridical side, the civil funeral ritual in the district is convincingly following an ascending line. It is being most rapidly established in regions with profoundly revolutionary and atheistic traditions, with a stabilized economic basis, such as the agro-industrial regions of the plains, while in the hilly regions the stability of the religious ritual is obvious. The importance of factors such as social affiliation, education, sex and age of those performing the burial is indicated in the degree to which civil funerals and memorials are established. The creation and establishment of a funeral ritual system with a material content is a complex process, linked with the ideology and psyche of the personality and the social groups. It is continuing to take shape under the impact of the dynamic social processes in a struggle with the stable religious traditions until it fully takes its historical place in society.
