Summary/Abstract: Aurel Vijoli is an important but very little known figure for Romania’s post-war history. He was an official of the National Bank of Romania. He became a party member in 1943 and he helped the Communists gain control over the National Bank after 1945. Vijoli was one of the people concerned with the economic reforms promoted by the Communists after the war. He was appointed to important positions, such as Governor of the National Bank. From this position, he helped the Groza Government to implement financial and monetary policies. He had no political aspirations and he was an important witness in the trial of Vasile Luca. He was accused of sabotaging the economic reform; he was investigated and arrested. Two years later, he was released and he returned to the party. He was also appointed the minister of Finance. Aurel Vijoli remains one of the planned economy architects in post-war Romania.
