Summary/Abstract: Poverty, and in consequence social and financial exclusion, is a current phenomenon not only in poor countries − the developed countries are also in conflict with it. They are seeking a solution to this problem in microfinance, which is a dynamically developing field of finances. Microfinance means offering basic financial services, such as credit, savings and insurance to socially, financially excluded people and microentrepreneurs. Microcredit is the most recognized and powerful instrument of microfinance. This is a small loan offered by Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) to people in need. This source often allows people to invest in small business, make themselves self-employed and break the chain of poverty. The goal of this article is the presentation of the social and financial exclusion issues and micro finance as well as the analysis and the evaluation of the activity of the European Union in this area.
