Summary/Abstract: Microfinance means offering basic financial services such as credit, savings and insurance to socially, financially excluded people and microentrepreneurs. Microcredit is the most recognized and powerful instrument of microfinance. This is a small loan offered by Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) to people in need. This source often allows people to invest in small business, make themselves self-employed and break the chain of poverty. Microfinance became known in countries of the poor, however, in the last years it gained recognition also in Europe. The goal of the article is a presentation and the analysis of policy initiatives and instruments to support microfinance issues in the European Union.
