Summary/Abstract: Evidently, the weakening of the Middle Kingdom in the 1850s gave the Russians a rare and exceptional opportunity, in the bilateral cooperation so far, to impose a new legal framework combined with a successive weighing the balance of advantages in their own favour. The author went through the substance of the three key treaties responsible for this process: the Treaty of Kulja (5 July 1851), Aigun (28 May 1858) and Tianjin (13 June 1858), where we find numerous examples of clauses of enormous importance for the further Sino-Russian relations. Another key feature of the research was to pay close attention to the motivation of the Russians’ conduct presented by the Government organisations from St. Petersburg, especially visible in the description of the circumstances of signing the Treaty of Tianjin in relation to China’s contacts with the outside world. Taking the above-mentioned into consideration, the aim of the present paper is to present in more detail the way, how the relevant data of the treaties was covered by the official propaganda body of the Imperial Tsarist Russia in the conquered Kingdom of Poland, moreover, in a period of an enormous oscilliation of an amplitude of prestige of the Tsar’s authority caused both by the aftermath of the Revolution of 1848 and Russia’s defeat in the Crimean War.
