Summary/Abstract: A chapter of J. Culler’s book Literary in Theory (Stanford 2007). The article’s original version was published as What Is Cultural Studies? (in: The Practice of Cultural Analysis, ed. M. Bal, Stanford 1999). Analysed is the history of cultural studies, their status as a research field being considered. In his attempt at defining this field, Culler proposes three hypotheses. Cultural studies namely: (a) deal with the ways in which people produce popular culture out of mass culture; (b) is a practice whose ‘theory’ is formed by a structuralism-originated interdisciplinary theoretical body; (c) is a camouflaged resumption of certain uncompleted projects of structuralism, with its neglected aspects coming to the fore. Based on these considerations, a vision emerges of cultural studies not definable in opposition to literary science and so-called high theory.
