The Displacement of Slovaks from Hungary to Czechoslovakia (Promotion activities of the Czechoslovak Commission of Resettlement and complaints of displaced Slovak people during the population exchange)

Summary/Abstract: The issue of population exchange after World War II between the Czechoslovak Republic and Hungary has produced a great amount of research among the Slovak and Hungarian historical community. Nevertheless, historians on both sides still need to carry out accurate research on various issues regarding the resettlement of the post-war population. Clarification of the individual facts of the events during the exchange of resettled Slovak people from Hungary to Slovakia is still awaiting some in-depth research. Hungarian historiography has devoted much time to the issue of relocation (or deportation) of the Hungarian ethnic group from neighbouring countries to the territory of Hungary after World War II. Consciously or unconsciously, the circumstances and issues around the resettlement of Slovaks did not fall within its preferred research topics. (e.g. The wrongs committed against displaced Slovak people) Similarly, Slovak historiography has also neglected this issue. This presented contribution, therefore, aims to draw attention to the individual circumstances of the resettlement of Slovaks from Hungary to their new (and old) native country in some areas of Slovakia. The submitted paper focuses on the complaints and injustices of the displaced Slovak people at the time of resettlement in Hungary as well as on the agitation (propaganda) activities of the Czechoslovak Resettlement Commission among the Slovak inhabitants of Hungary. The Slovaks who signed up for resettlement soon met with serious social problems; the feeling of exclusion from the authorities of the Hungarian state and the surrounding Hungarian community in which they lived, as well as from the Slovak community - those Slovaks who did not sign up for resettlement - and quite often from their own families. The inhabitants from Hungary or the territory of today's Slovakia who participated in the voluntary or forcible population exchange often faced the opprobrium of society.
