«Old» Professorate and «Excellent Technicians»: The Scientific Intelligentsia of Kazan in the First Years of the Soviet Power

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the condition of intellectual community of Kazan in the first years of the Soviet power. Influence of educational and scientific policy of Bolsheviks on various groups of the scientific intelligentsia of the city is shown. Conditions of development of scientific activity of the Kazan humanists and representatives of natural specialties are considered. Emergence in the region of higher educational institutions of new type — practical institutes which personnel basis was made by the former junior teachers of the university is investigated. It is noted that with assistance of the authorities the new layer of republican scientific elite as opposed to university professorate has begun to be formed of the staff of applied higher education institutions.
