Summary/Abstract: The article analyses Sokrat Janowicz’s memories (a member of the Belarusian Literature Association “Belavezha”) about the environment of the Belarusian national minority in the Bialystok region from the mid-1950s to the end of the 1980s. The writer from Krynki, translator, journalist, in his memoirs “I do not pity my lived years” describes the process of shaping his national consciousness and the place native Krynki took in it. Janowicz, an active member of various Belarusian organizations, presents problems which the Belarusian environment was facing when they were founding the Belarusian Social and Cultural Association, the Belarusian weekly “Niva”, the Belarusian Literature Association “Belavezha”, describes their functioning and significance for the inhabitants of Bialystok region.
