Summary/Abstract: Following the decade of American interventionism, at the beginning of the 21st century, the world finds itself at turning point in the matter of use of military force for the purpose of resolving large-scale humanitarian crises. Traditional issues which prevented timely and effective action in crises such as those in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo have yet to be resolved. These issues include Cold War structure of the United Nations, as well as issues related to activities of regional alliances such as NATO, outside the scope of their competencies. However, the need for interventions, such as the one in Kosovo – when the term ‘military humanism’ was indeed coined, is growing and can be expected to grow even further in future. The situation where there are more failed states than ever, the reform of the system for ensuring collective peace and security in the world has faltered, and destructive influence of regional powers is increasingly visible, make further engagement of the United States indispensable for world peace. However, the wholesale bankruptcy of the idea of military humanism, as well as the economic and political consequences of military adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq, make it doubtful whether the United States are still ready to occupy the place they deserve in this regard in the international arena.
