Summary/Abstract: Every war has heroes, typically in the person of male-soldiers, but one cannot overlook the involvement of women in the struggle for independence during the First World War, or their active participation in the armed struggle for its subsequent maintenance. The position of a woman after the First World War changed significantly. Military experience allowed women, if not completely, at least partially, to free themselves from the rigid structures prevailing in the patriarchal society and to commit their forces to cooperate in building the foundations of a new Poland. The key role in these activities was played by Stanisława Filipina Paleolog, who established the “Women’s Police” in 1925. The officers under her command made every effort to assist in the reliable functioning of the emerging structures of the State Police, fighting, among other crimes, the illegal trafficking of women, prostitution, juvenile delinquency and drug trafficking. The subject of the article’s analysis is the actions taken by women to regain and maintain independence, in particular the efforts of Stanisława Paleolog. The first part of the article discusses her involvement in the struggle to regain independence and defend it during the years 1914-1920. The second part is devoted to the activities of the women’s police and the role she played. The final part shows her commitment to the fate of the state during the Second World War and her life following the cessation of hostilities.
