Summary/Abstract: The rearrangement of Bulgarian folk songs began in the late National Revival Period continuing to this day. Such a transcription of the authentic sources along with composing music in ‘folk style’ evokes mixed response and generates heated polemics. The paper traces, as an accent in the area of research interest, the factors that have led to a change in the attitudes towards the performers of such music: choirs and singing groups performing arranged folklore both at home and abroad. ‘Breaking with the tradition’, ‘amateur arts activities or professionalism’, a ‘commercial activity’ or a ‘marker of national identity’ are just some of the oppositions, designating the phenomenon under consideration.
