Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we first briefly discuss the various types of abbreviations, their structure and form. Then, in the body of the text we analyse the language of Montenegrin online media and its derivational potential. We single out the most frequent models characterised by suffixes -ov -ovski, -ovac, as well as some less productive models characterised by suffixes -ovka, -ovački and -izacija where abbreviations appear as motivators of second-degree derivatives. We dedicate a particular attention to the meanings of the newly created units which belong to the class of nouns and adjectives, respectively. At the same time, we try to establish which journalistic genres they are typical of.
