Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the socio-cultural competencies determined by the state educational requirements for learning literature in high school. The text emphasizes their inconformity with the standards for civic education as well as with the needs of the civil society for personalities who can think critically and are able to take active and responsible position. This work also insists on reformulating the regulations for socio-cultural competence with regard to adoption of the social role of the citizen
