KNOWLEDGE WORKERS – HUMAN CAPITAL IN THE FUNCTION OF INCREASING INTELLECTUAL POTENTIAL AND PERFORMANCES OF ENTERPRISES

Summary/Abstract: The changes in contemporary business environment have influenced the appearance of innovative ways of doing business based on new technologies and knowledge. The society becomes the knowledge society, and business organizations become intensive in using knowledge resources. Economy takes the characteristics of the knowledge economy. Organizational culture, the ways of doing business and nature of the business have changed, as well as necessary skills and knowledge for their efficient realisation. All these changes have brought the change in the structure of a labour force of enterprises in the 21st century and a new category of employees, i.e. knowledge workers. The aim of the paper is to explain who the knowledge workers are in knowledge enterprises and other enterprises that cannot acquire such an attribute in the knowledge economy era, and what exactly the importance of knowledge workers for business, market success, value creation and competitiveness improvement in contemporary circumstances is. Additionally, the intent is also to highlight the role of knowledge workers in the development of knowledge-intensive companies, i.e. the manner in which they perform everyday activities in different organisational units by employing their individual, but also organisational codified knowledge.
