Summary/Abstract: Hristo Popstoilov is mainly known as a Bulgarian folklorist and ethnographist, but not all of his Philological works are well-known. The author’s main purpose in writing this article is to represent his general linguistic writings and to accentuate the philological value they have today. Popstoilov’s studies cited here are found in different periodical editions. They are divided in four general groups, depending on the linguistic field they are concerned with. The first group contains some critical reviews on textbooks used in Bulgarian Secondary and High Schools. In the second group there are two publications representing his contributions to the Bulgarian lexicology and to the studies on the Bulgarian onomatology. One of these publications is an index of the proper names – male, female, micro and macro toponymy. The third group contains Popstoilov’s studies which are of great importance in the science of dialects. In these monographs Hristo Popstoilov describes the specifics of the dialect of his home place. The last part of the present article shows a short description of the text of his thesis. It was defended in 1907 in Vienna. The object of Popstoilov’s observation is the Bulgarian folk riddles. The scientist analyzed the structure, elements and stylistic devices in these short forms in the Bulgarian folklore and represented his own riddle classification using their answers as a base.
