Summary/Abstract: Josip Broz Tito was the charismatic Yugoslav leader and the existence of the “second” Yugoslavia is connected to him. He was rewarded many times with different decorations and awards. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences, University and held an honorary PhD in military science. The idea to honor him with the title PhD of Military Science was initiated at the end of his life and he was awarded the degree in 1976. This was done in order to secure continuity of policy and ideology after his death. General subjects for future PhDs in military science were determined by pointing out Tito’s role in WWII and with the establishment of peoples’ defense and war arts’ concepts. Slogans like: “And after Tito – Tito” initially originated from the military surroundings, and the slogan was rhymed through: “Comrade Tito we swear to you we will never astray from your path.” It is a fact that the Army was the base of his power and ideological thinking and it was dedicated to those things. The honorary PhD ultimately had little effect on history – Tito’s cult was one of few factors giving Yugoslavia integrative cohesion, and so was the Army, which was falling apart together with the society. The state disintegrated in bloody battles during the 1990s and those who had inherited it did not succeed in preventing its disintegration. The story about Tito and his PhD in military science is also a story about those who gave him this honorable title.
