Summary/Abstract: After considering the interconnectedness of the biographical and fictional in Ćopić’s posthumously published text entitled The Tefter (also known as 12-XII-1939, in the evening), this paper focuses on (im)possibilities of its genre determination. Given the fact that the latter is equally conditioned by both the autobiographical and novelistic discourse, it seems inappropriate to categorically express its genealogical status. The narrative sublimation of segments related to the phenomenon of war, seen from a child’s perspective, is singled out as a separate topic of research. With the precedence of historic and documentary aspects over metaphorisation, the understanding of war is taken into the domain of ambivalence, absurdity and humanism, eternally lingering on the border of the experiential and abstract. When read in the light of autobiographico-novelistic discourse and auto-fiction, the aforementioned provides answers to some fundamental questions concerning Ćopić’s poetics, especially about the technique Ćopić applies to reach, utilising naive perspective, the universal and symbolic dimension of his own age.
