Summary/Abstract: Persian Sufi and poet Muhammad Jalaluddin Balhi (1207–1273), also known as Rumi, offers one of the most comprehensive and significant theories of tolerance. This paper examines Rumi’s theory by placing it in the historical context and questioning its different arguments. He reminds us that tolerance preceded liberalism, not just as politics but as language as well. The article provides proofs that Rumi’s defense of tolerance is more easily applicable than the majority of earliest modern theories of tolerance.
