Summary/Abstract: This essay investigates the chord – obtained through the influence of the Phrygian mode – that is well-known to music theorists as the Neapolitan. Capable of many interpretations, and rich in expressive possibilities, the Neapolitan’s use both as an independent chord and a harmonic complex make it a strong expressive agent that creates a striking sonic effect. Depending on the stylistic environment, the Neapolitan – as the common-third chord (Terzgleich) in a harmonic progression – reveals nuanced alternatives in the figurative potential of the harmonic process.
