Summary/Abstract: Rev. Zygmunt Chmielnicki (1891-1944), a priest of the diocese of Lutsk has a mysterious card from the period of World War II in his biography. Some believe that he was appointed (or consecrated) as bishop of Żytomierz by the ordinary bishop of Lutsk, Adolf Piotr Szelążek. Another hypothesis is, however, more probable: he was Bishop Szelążek’s candidate for an ordinary bishop of Lutsk (after the death of Bishop Stefan Walczykiewicz, 11 May 1940). The following study is devoted to the arguments against the claim that Rev. Chmielnicki was a bishop of Żytomierz (it is improbable), and the work presents the analysis of the reasons why it was more probable that Rev. Chmielnicki was a candidate for the post of auxiliary bishop in Lutsk. After World War II, Bishop Adolf Piotr Szelążek abandoned his attempts to appoint Rev. Zygmunt Chmielnicki as auxiliary bishop due to the fact that his candidate died in KL Gross-Rosen 16 April 1944 and the Easter borderlands of the Republic of Poland, including the whole diocese of Lutsk, were incorporated into the Soviet Union.
