Summary/Abstract: In Abraham J. Heschel’s philosophy human being experiences existential suffering because he does not know who he is. He fears the truth of himself. He flees from it. He accuse himself of egoism and callousness. He is frightened of a pessimistic vision of human nature and himself. He gives his life to God. He tries to recognize God’s will, guesses God’s wishes. Since it is an extremely difficult undertaking – if not impossible – he doom himself to anxiety and insecurity. The more anxiety he feels, the more he heads towards God. Is this heading a result of the will to building a relationship with God or an escape from himself? Is fulfilling God’s wishes discovering of his identity or abandoning it?
