Summary/Abstract: Estimating the level of violence against disabled women is difficult, due to insufficient data. Given that many disabled persons are deeply dependent on their carers (who are usually their partners or parents), they rarely ever report abuse to any institutions providing help to victims of violence. The disability they have frequently serves as a constraining factor, and compels them to stay in an abusive relationship. The article deals with the differences in terminology and definitions concerning the nature of disability, and issues concerning violence, as viewed by various scholars and expert bodies. The aim of this article is to raise the awareness of the complex position of disabled women experiencing violence.
