Summary/Abstract: Based on the assumptions of social construction, it was assumed that a chronic illness and disability are social constructs, entangled in the world of senses and meanings, created within the framework of social definition, interpretation and explanation. These constructs are dynamic. In the last few decades there have been significant changes in the construction of breast cancer meanings in the social space as well as in social roles played by patients, subjecting themselves to dominant constructs or provoking changes in these constructs. Shame and pride have been entangled in negotiating the meanings of breast cancer. The article, based on a review of the literature, presents the changes in the process of negotiating the meanings of breast cancer in public discourse, exposing the significance of emotions of shame and pride.
