Summary/Abstract: Based on first-hand observations (carried out in 1991) and on the relevant literature on carnival and dance, the author analyzes carnival dancing in Punat on the island of Krk. Recognizing in it some elements of initiatory ceremonies, as well as strong features of profane festivities, the author categorizes the carnival in Punat as Saturnalian. Dancing, namely dance events, are studeid within the carnival context, as one of its main parts. The author analyzes the dance repertory, older as well as more recent; dancing characteristics of particular dances, and social aspects such as age and sex of participants in dance events. Special attention is paid to sapa, players of a traditional instrument called sopele, as factors in transmitting traditional dances.
