Summary/Abstract: In the time of global recession and financial crisis, in which countries are looking for new solutions that will re-employ workforce and economic infrastructure, increasing demand for energy and raising prices show robustness in such a manner forcing policy makers towards new sources of energy that will not only represent a response to an increased energy consumption, but also be a relevant factor and/or indicator of economic growth and development. Since ‘sustainable’ economic development nowadays is not possible without the use of various energy, especially one which comes from renewable sources, it creates a new economic-energy gap which fulfilment can improve economic life of any country. Croatia has a great investment potential in the field of renewable energy, and latest economic instruments and regulatory framework arrangement taken from the European Union, have gradually begun to create a favourable investment climate within renewable energy potential. Emerging from a positivist objectivity, the goal of this paper is to provide, by analytical synthesis framed in statistical data analysis, an insight into the basic concepts and features of Croatian energy sector as well as to provide an overview of investment potentials, legal framework and regulation in the area of renewable energy sources (especially solar energy) in order to understand the procedure of acquiring the status of eligible producer and analyze profitability of investment in a small solar power plant.
