Summary/Abstract: New data concerning thirty one proto-Illyrian and Illyrian fortified settlements in Herzegovina, which are situated at Čapljina (1), Čitluk (2), Grude (6), Ljubuški (2), Mostar (3), Nevesinje (1 ), Posušje (5), Stolac (3), Široki Brijeg (7), Tomislavgrad (1) enrich our knowledge of distribution of these fortified settlements and the time of their building. The surface archaeological finds generally point to six proto-Dlyriic and Illyric fortified settlements were inhabited in bronze age, twelve in bronze and iron ages, six fortified settlements in iron age, while for seven fortified prehistoric settlements there are only topographic data, and parts of fortification walls. For ten settlements we give sketches of groun-plans. In four instances there exist special buildings made of fragmented stone with no mortar, which, it seems served for cult purposes; they are as follows: at Kolobarić Dolac, and the Kvesića fortified hill near Široki Brijeg, Kamenik at Kruševo near Mostar, and Obale near Čitluk (Broćno), which is a contribution to the study of pre-historic holy places, which were built of lime stone and with no mortar, in the lower Neretva. The preserved cultural layers, at the said localities, may yield useful data for further study of pre-historic civilizations in Herzegovina.
