Summary/Abstract: The term „postsecularism” appeared at the beginning of the 21st century and has made a spectacular career in a variety of critical discourses since then. This article argues that well before its appearance Thomas Merton was postsecular avant la lettre and that, moreover, the postsecular turn was largely influenced by Merton’s dialogue with representatives of various religions as well as with agnostics and non-believers. The coexistence of irreconcilable belief systems and ways of life forces us, inhabitants of late modernity, to accept diversity without attempting to reconcile differences. Thomas Merton has much to offer to the postsecular world.
