Summary/Abstract: Mining as the main branch of the economy of the imperial estates in Illyricum deeply influenced the provincial structure of Noricum, Pannonia, Dalmatia and Moesia Superior. Two aspects of that phenomenon, insufficiently understood so far, have been examined in the present paper: (1) the military aid to the administration, the work and the defence of the domain and its mine, and (2) the relations between the mining districts and the portorium lllyrici. Both show that Rome, in its efforts to adapt the provincial system of Illyricum to the demands of mining, tended to use certain forms of organization unknown, or scarcely known, to the other parts of the Empire. That state of affairs reflects the paramount importance Illyrican res metallica had for the life of the whole of Imperium Romanum.
