Summary/Abstract: The political and religious turmoil of late seventeenth century Moldavia also affected the state of the Catholic Church within the country. Rome received frequent reports on the Moldavian Catholics from the high and low clergy, from missionaries or from travellers. Such a report, written in September 1693 in Vienna by the Trinitarian monk Mauro, was sent to the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide. The report describes the activity of one of the most important members of the Catholic community in Iaşi, the Franciscan conventual Francesco Antonio Renzi. Mauro’s account also includes the events from the last two years of Constantin Cantemir’s reign, such as the murder of Costin brothers or the connexions with Habsburgs or with the Wallachian ruler, Constantin Brâncoveanu.
