Summary/Abstract: It is required of Croatia, as a multicultural society, to arrange the relations between the dominant and minority groups according to the principles of cultural pluralism. This is not easy to accomplish due to a lack of tradition in dealing with this issue as well as to a suppressed awareness of the Croats regarding their identity. Thus interculturalism as a world movement today imposes upon Croatia two basic tasks. The first is the strengthening of Croatian identity, and the second - the establishment of a foundation for cultural pluralism. In carrying out these tasks we are obliged to follow general global trends, but their solutions have to be evaluated and adapted to our circumstances, which presents a great methodological challenge, but also provides chances for development. Some general methodological challenges are presented in the paper that should be dealt with in order to improve the field of interculturalism in education, from the need to give accurate conceptual definitions in the field, through the need for systematic research, of differences between qualitative and quantitative research and of important synthesis in research, to the relevance of interdisciplinary research in this field.
