Summary/Abstract: The theme of humankind’s sustainable development is one of the current fundamental paradigm in which the future is forecasted and planned as a balanced approach between economic growth, social equity and environmental protection. Nowadays it is more and more in vogue at international level, but also in Romania, mainly as a result of the European and international regulations. The premises of the research are based on two elements of novelty and actuality: the sustainable development, on the one hand, and the potential of the projects to contribute to the national implementation, on the other. This article aims, starting from literature and official documents analysis, as well as from the observation of facts, events, to define the key concept of sustainable development, both at EU and national level and to put this concept in relation to defence and security field. Also it highlights the projects’ potential to support this principle in Romania. The two main topics covered by this analysis are intended to support the conclusion that European funds should be seen as an additional mean of action to be used in achieving Romania's goals including in the area of security and defence, but also as an obligation to write and implement projects (due to its EU membership status) that could help Romania to address some of its current challenges.
