Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of research into socio-cultural trauma in Central Eastern Europe. In order to verify the theory of trauma, representative survey data obtained in Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Russia and Ukraine were used. The conducted analyses have shown that post-communist societies negatively evaluate changes in the economic and political system. Trauma stems from the decreased quality of life and increased crime rate. The surveyed residents of postcommunist countries claimed that the system transformation was disadvantageous to them, and, due to trauma, they saw the future pessimistically. The reaction to their emerging trauma was their nostalgia for communism and the social security it offered. Factors mitigating trauma in post-communist societies are education, age and pro- European tendencies.
