Summary/Abstract: Only that activity in a community is political, which is practiced in accordance with the general requirements of interest to the life of the community. The starting point for un understanding of this relationship is a unity of politics and ethics. The political must determine its concept as a mediated form that makes an evaluation of life in real political communities possible. In its beginnings practical philosophy was called politics in the wider meaning of the word; today it could be called ethics. In this way the autonomy of ethics and the vitality of ethical subjectivity would not only express its independence from metaphysics but would also acquire primacy in relationship to the objectivity of politics as state. Practical philosophy would acquire its contemporary designation that would cover both its modern and its antique meaning.
