Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to establish the transparent use of methodology in a research project concerning immigrants' human rights. It first considers whether cosmopolitanism and communitarianism, as the two approaches in contemporary normative political theory, are complementary in how they view the rights of immigrants to enter and remain in countries of receipt. In order to empirically verify the points where the principles and arguments of the two approaches meet, a case study of the European immigration policy has been designed based on qualitative methods and EU documents theme analysis. This article looks into the methodological steps taken during the empirical part of the research project, the criteria applied to document sampling, the determination of a coding unit, the coding rules, as well as the approach to creating coding schemes, the pertaining codes and their structure. The main contribution of this article is the design of an original coding scheme that structures EU immigration policy using the dimensions of the fundamental elements of that policy, its objectives, instruments, actors, target groups, principles behind its creation and the context in which it takes form. That coding scheme can also serve as a potential contribution towards building a European immigration policy model.
